Harken Derm is proud to announce its partnership with the New York Yacht Club American Magic Team. This choice by the team members is a testament to the hard work of our co-founder Dr. Edit Olasz Harken who created professional skincare products to protect the skin of athletes who compete in the toughest conditions.
The next America’s Cup will be held in March 2021 in Auckland New Zealand, and since the first race in 1851, the America’s Cup has been regarded as the most important yacht racing event in the world. It remains sports oldest international trophy, and has pushed the limits of human ingenuity engineering and innovation for a hundred and sixty eight years.
Forty-five years before the first modern Olympics, a yacht race was held at the Royal Yacht Squadron in the United Kingdom for a race around the Isle of Wight.
The most famous quote from that event was inspired by Queen Victoria as she saw the schooner America break through the mist and approach the finish line. When she turned and asked one of her attendants who would be second - he simply replied, “Your Majesty, there is no second.” These words have come to exemplify the America’s Cup and its winner-take-all pursuit.
An American schooner by the name of America crewed by John Cox Stevens made the trip to England to compete in the event. Little did that crew know, this race would grow to become the intense and brutally hard-fought spectacle it is today.
“It’s been said that trying to win the Americas Cup is like climbing Mt. Everest, in a pair of sandals, backward.” It’s hard to argue with that quote. The Cup was named after the winning boat America, and it remained at the New York Yacht Club for 132 years until the epic contest between Dennis Conner and John Bertrand saw it depart America’s shores in 1983. Team American Magic’s AC75 foiling monohull “Defiant” is in the quest to bring it home again.
Looking back over the years of this extraordinary race, innovation has always been as important to the America’s Cup as much as racing skills. This contest has constantly pushed the capabilities and ingenuity of the competing teams, from the production of one of the largest composite wings ever built in 2010, to the breathtaking speed of 47 knots achieved by the winning New Zealand team in 2017.
